As a photographer, I always love the opportunity to capture the special bond between loved ones. That’s why I was so excited when Nadine decided to use the Savage Mill Studio for her family’s photo session. I don’t advertise that I do family photography but I’m always happy to do a family session for repeat clients. I photographed Riley’s birth and Ryan’s newborn session so it was a no-brainer when Nadine asked to do a set of family photos.
I had never shot at the Savage Mill Studio before but, knowing that fellow Maryland photographer Carly Fuller often rents the studio out to other photogs, I decided to take advantage of the space for this family’s photos…not only because it’s getting chilly out but also because I know and love this family and thought they’d be a great test audience for my first session at the studio.
From the moment they walked through the door, I could tell that this was going to be a great test run. Nadine, who had been traveling for work as recently as the previous night (mothers are amazing), ran quickly to Old Navy that morning and had outfitted the fam in some cozy, coordinating outfits. While Nadine was getting Ryan dressed, I got some test shots with Riley in the window and then snagged Ryan for some solo shots.
I’m pretty glad I got those first test shots of Riley because the Savage Mill Studio, which boasts large windows and sheer white curtains, really showed off that sunny morning. The natural light coming in through the windows was just perfect for Riley’s big smile and she followed my instructions to a T. I always wonder how this three year old is so well-behaved. Every time I see her, she’s smiley, cheerful and cooperative which is NOT what you’d regularly expect from a three year old (just ask any parent).
As we started taking family photos, I couldn’t help but smile at the way Nadine and Cedric snuggled up with their little ones. They are clearly doting parents, and it’s apparent that this is a family who speaks kindly and is concerned with being loving and respectful.
Ryan was a little wide-eyed and watchful but went with the flow as his parents cuddled him close, and he seemed to enjoy all the attention. Nadine shared with me later than he missed his morning nap so he wasn’t his normal cheerful self…but still cute!
As for Riley, she was a natural in front of the camera (as always). She was full of energy and had a big smile on her face throughout the session. She is a joy to photograph, and I love capturing her bubbly personality on camera.
As we moved through the session at the Savage Mill Studio, I made sure to capture a variety of shots – from close-up family portraits to candid shots of the kids playing. I wanted to make sure that Nadine and Cedric had a wide range of images to choose from, as time flies when you have little ones and I want them to look back on this time fondly.
In the end, we ended up with a beautiful collection of images that perfectly captured the joy and love of this family. Nadine and Cedric were thrilled with the results, and I know that they will cherish these photos for years to come.
Overall, it was such a pleasure to work with with this family again and to have my inaugural run at the Savage Mill Studio. Nadine and crew are such a lovely family, and I was honored to capture their special bond on camera. I can’t wait to work with them again in the future!
