I love my job. I adore that my job description includes clicking a little black box in the face of a toddler who is covered in cake and icing. Not gonna lie, I’m a little OCD so of course I prefer when that cake-and-icing-covered toddler is outside and not in my studio…but I’ll clean up the studio in the winter if it means more cuties coming to me to smash that cake!
This summer I had a rush of little bebes turning one and I’ve got a whole lineup for this coming year of First Year Membership grads so I don’t see any end to those cute, sticky faces, praise the good Lord. I’m down to see all the minis smash that cake!
Are you curious what a cake smash session with Liz Viernes Photography entails? Well, it’s simple enough. I ask you to provide the cake and a handful of outfits so that the gallery has some variety. We start with portraits of the little prince or princess. I like to do a little neutral setup on a blanket (think an upside down crate with some texture in the form of boy or girl colors) commemorating that an important birthday is happening. I have a rocking chair I can bring for those little dimply hands to grab onto to steady those toddling feet. Maybe some little wooden toys or girly pearls for those little hands to grab (and for that mouth to chew on – don’t worry, all my props are cleaned and sanitized between uses). After portraits of the birthday boy or girl, mom and dad can get in on the fun, if they want, to document the most important people in their little babe’s life.
After portraits, in whatever cute outfit mom and dad choose, it’s time for the cake! I always suggest bare tummies and bare toes for this part because where’s the fun in having those cute baby bits covered up!!! I try to snap a pic or two of the cake before baby plows into it and then it’s time to go to town! While baby is let loose to smash that cake, I’m running all around, capturing the adorable antics from every angle possible because your little precious only turns one once!
