As a newborn photographer, one of the most important aspects of my craft is creating stunning compositions that showcase the beauty and innocence of my tiny subjects. Sometimes I get a little bored creating the same images over and over – there’s only so much you can do in newborn photography and the old standards are beautiful and timeless so it’s hard to go wrong – so I incorporate these composition tricks whenever I can to satisfy my need to create something a little different.
Here are a few tips to help other photographers create memorable, stunning compositions in their own newborn photography sessions:
- Use negative space: Negative space, or the empty space around your subject, can be just as important as the subject itself. In newborn photography, using negative space can help draw the viewer’s eye to the baby and create a sense of calm and tranquility.
- Experiment with angles: Don’t be afraid to get creative with your camera angles. Try shooting from above or below your subject to add interest and depth to your compositions.
- Incorporate props: Props such as blankets, baskets, and wraps can add texture and color to your compositions and help create a cohesive theme for your newborn photo shoot. Just be sure to keep the focus on the baby and avoid using too many props, as they can distract from the main subject.
- Use light and shadow: Proper lighting is essential in newborn photography. Experiment with different sources of light, such as natural light or off-camera flash, to create depth and dimension in your compositions. Additionally, using shadows can add visual interest and a sense of drama to your images.
- Include the parents: Don’t forget to include the parents in your newborn compositions. Capturing the love and emotion of the family can add a personal touch to your images and create a more meaningful experience for your clients.
By following these tips, you can create stunning compositions that showcase the beauty and innocence of your newborn subjects. With a little creativity and attention to detail, you can create timeless images that your clients will cherish for a lifetime.
