I adore in-home maternity photos and it’s a type of session that I’m doing more and more, especially considering that we’re going into the long, cold days of winter. Who wants to traipse around outside in a gorgeous, flowing dress while simultaneously freezing your bits to pieces?? Not me…even considering the fact that I get to keep my coat on! Spring, summer and fall have me all about those gorgeous maternity dresses and outdoor sessions but once the outdoor temps drop and stay below 50, I tap out. I’m a wienie.

When Jackie contacted me about doing my Belly to Baby package for her and Ryan’s first baby, I danced a little jig because a) she sounded awesome and fun and b) I love getting to know my clients and seeing them more than once! My jig got a little happier and crazier when she requested that both sessions be lifestyle (aka in-home) photos. My consultation phone call for any lifestyle session includes asking questions about the natural lighting and decor of the home as well as having the client send photos of the spaces that would be good for photos. This way I can picture the space and be assured that it is appropriate for the style of photography that I promise to deliver. If a client’s walls are dark blue and they have only a few tiny windows, the photos are NOT going to be light and airy, even if I use a flash. And that is no bueno if you’re coming to me for the type of photos that you see on my Instagram and website.

Jackie and Ryan’s home was *perfect* for in-home maternity photos, despite the day that dawned cloudy (instead of sunny the way it was “promised”). She told me their home was originally a small bungalow and they completely remodeled it to be a large, light-filled, beautiful space. Even more magical was the fact that it was decorated for Christmas so we were able to capture all of their decorations in the background of the photos. They also have a dog, Lilly, who is absolutely a part of the family and Jackie told me how important it was to capture them as a family of three before baby arrives.

I am thrilled with these in-home maternity photos and even more thrilled that Jackie is due any day with their baby boy. I’ll be going back for their lifestyle newborn session and I’ll make a point to re-create some of the photos from the maternity session, just with the baby on the outside this time!!
And lastly, what Covid in-home maternity photo session would be complete without some mask photos!?!
