Natural Light is Everything: How to Prep Your Home for a Lifestyle Newborn Session

Newborn

September 29, 2025

Let me be real with you for a second… I can stretch myself artistically. I’ve shot in tiny condos, crowded nurseries, and dark winter homes – where I swear the sun hibernates until April 😂 But nothing tests my skills quite like a lifestyle newborn session in a dimly lit space so, for the sake of my sanity and your memories, I’m going to share some lifestyle newborn photography light tips so that we can ensure your memories look the absolute best they can!

Just recently, I went back to a client’s home to photograph baby #2. I’d been there before – in November, cozy light diffused through the windows, everything gorgeous and glowy. This time around? July. A totally different story. Brighter daylight overall, yes, but the sunlight poured in at the WRONG angles, the room still wasn’t ideal, and I was tiptoeing around a toddler’s nap schedule that gave us a measly window (no pun intended) of time…in the darkest room of the house.

Let’s just say this session taught me a lot, and now I want to share that with you, so your gallery is full of magic, not muddy color casts. Also, the images in this post are not from the session I’m referring to – those images ended up passing my QC checks – after a LOT of backend work – but I want to protect the innocent 😉

Why Light Is Everything for Lifestyle Newborn Photography

Lifestyle newborn sessions happen in your home – your comfortable, meaningful space where your memories live. That’s the beauty of them. We’re capturing YOUR story. The baby swaddled in his crib. The quiet moment on your bed with your partner. The toddler climbing on the couch while you’re trying to breastfeed – it’s all part of the magic.

But here’s the truth: My editing style depends heavily on natural light. I don’t use artificial lighting for lifestyle newborn sessions, because it changes the entire feel of the image. The light you see pouring through your window? That’s my paintbrush. If it’s not there, or if weird light from lamps or overheads interferes, the scene loses that clean, timeless, honest look my clients love.

And don’t get me wrong – I can work some serious Lightroom magic. But when I’m hand-editing each photo because the lighting is different in every frame? We’ve ventured into emergency surgery territory. That’s not where I want to be – and definitely not the stress I want for your keepsake gallery.

Best Practices for a Beautiful, Light-Filled Baby Session

Let’s walk through how to set yourself up for success – and jaw-dropping photos – even if you don’t live in a glass house perched on a sunny hilltop.

1. Timing is everything… usually

I always aim to choose the best time of day when your home is naturally the brightest. The light likely shifts between your bedroom and the nursery depending on the time of day, so I’ll ask to see your space before we decide when to shoot.

HOWEVER… I’m not new to toddlers. Nap schedules reign supreme. If we have to work around them (which we usually do), I’ll do my best to make the most of the other available factors – even if the lighting isn’t totally ideal.

2. Show me the light (literally)

Before the session, I’ll ask you to take pics of the rooms you’d like to use. BUT! I have homework guidelines, and yes, I check them thoroughly because I’m bossy like that.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Take the photos at the brightest time of day for each room (and include those times in the email you send)
  • Open all curtains, lift all blinds – let in ALL the daylight you can
  • Take pictures:
    • From the doorway, facing the window (so I can see the light’s direction)
    • Next to the window, with your back to it (to show how far that light reaches)
    • From another vantage point, if necessary, to show the room’s layout

Also important? Turn off all artificial lights so I’m seeing only what the natural light is doing. I don’t need to see perfectly clean rooms at this point. If laundry is strewn everywhere and baby shower gifts are all over the place, that matters ZERO at this point – I won’t judge, I just want to see the light and the space. However, for the day of the session –>

3. Clear the clutter, keep the charm

Focus on decluttering the rooms you want in your photos. That means clearing away:

  • That pile of laundry on the dresser
  • The diaper stash on the floor
  • Target bags still waiting to be unpacked (it’s okay, I do that too)

BUT don’t stress about making your home look like a showroom. These photos are about your life, not perfection. Clear the clutter, but keep the personality.

4. Know the options when light isn’t perfect

Sometimes, the light just isn’t what we hoped. Here’s how I adapt:

  • Option 1: If we can’t move the session, I’ll focus on areas that have better lighting even if it means skipping nursery shots or the cute master bedroom decor you love
  • Option 2: If you have daylight bulbs (5000K lighting), I can use that in a pinch because it mimics outdoor light. Traditional yellow bulbs? Nope, too much weird, warm casting.
  • Option 3: Worst-case scenario, I go full workaround mode, push my camera settings to the limit, and hand-edit each frame to even things out. I can do it, but it may limit what I can include in your gallery and slows down delivery.

So let’s avoid that if we can, okay? 😉

5. Outfit choices matter more than you think

Light and neutral clothing helps reflect the available light, making everything feel brighter and airier. Stick with:

  • Creams, whites, light grays, pastels
  • Soft, natural textures (cotton, knits, linen)
  • Avoid loud patterns, graphics, or dark colors. They absorb light and compete in the image.

I’ll provide you with more outfit guidance when we prep for the session – you won’t go in blind, I promise!

Why This Matters: It’s Not Just About Pretty Pictures

These moments with your baby… they’re gone in a blink. You deserve a gallery that reflects the love, the warmth, and the connection of your growing family – not one dimmed by lighting challenges we could’ve avoided.

When you take the time to prepare your space and schedule thoughtfully, I can do what I do best: deliver photos that stop time. That give you a glimpse of the emotion in those early days. That make you say, “OHMYSTARS, that’s us.
