When it comes to planning your maternity photo shoot, one of the most important decisions you’ll make is what to wear. After all, your outfit will be a key part of the final photographs, so it’s important to choose something that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and beautiful.

What To Wear: Show Off The Bump

What To Wear: flowy, light-colored dress

One thing to keep in mind when thinking about what to wear is that your clothing should showcase your baby bump. This is the star of the show, after all! Look for pieces that highlight your curves and show off your growing belly.

What To Wear: Loose and Flowy

Loose, flowing dresses and tops are a popular choice for maternity photo shoots, as they are comfortable to wear and provide a romantic, ethereal look. Empire waist dresses, which have a fitted bodice and a flared skirt, are also a great choice as they draw the eye upwards and showcase your baby bump.

What To Wear: Form-fitting

Form-fitting dresses and tops can also be a good choice for maternity photographs. Look for pieces that hug your curves and show off your baby bump, such as bodycon dresses or fitted tops. Just be sure to avoid anything that is too tight or restrictive, as this can be uncomfortable and unflattering. Also pay attention to undergarments as visible straps outside of the dress or lines underneath the dress can be very distracting to the eye.

What To Wear: Color

When it comes to color, neutral shades such as white, cream, and blush are always classic choices for maternity photographs. These shades are timeless and provide a clean, fresh look. However, don’t be afraid to add a pop of color with a bright accessory or piece of jewelry.

What To Wear: Accessories

Props and accessories can also add interest and personality to your maternity photographs. Consider incorporating items that are meaningful to you and your partner, such as a family heirloom or a special piece of jewelry. Flowers, scarves, and wraps can also add a touch of romance and femininity to your photographs.

What To Wear: Consider Location

It’s also important to consider the location of your photo shoot when choosing your outfit. If you’ll be outside, consider the weather and choose pieces that will be comfortable in the elements. If you’ll be in a studio, you’ll have more flexibility in terms of your outfit choices.

What To Wear: Final Considerations

what to wear: comfortable dress

Ultimately, the most important thing is to choose an outfit that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Maternity photographs are a celebration of the incredible journey of pregnancy, and you want to look and feel your best. So, take the time to choose an outfit that reflects your personal style and makes you feel beautiful.

What To Wear: For Him

I realize I’ve talked all about mom’s outfits and none about dad’s…this is because mom is the main event. We are all there to see her glowing self featuring that beautiful baby bump, right?? But dad is important too! I always counsel dad to be comfortable during the photo session. If he’s a jeans guy, let him wear jeans. If he’s up for khakis, do that! You can totally dress a guy up with nicer shoes and a belt, or let him be casual (just no gym shorts!).

The most important thing about dad, besides his comfort, is that his style should complement mom’s. He shouldn’t be in a tux if she’s wearing a sundress – that would look weird, right? Dress mom first, then focus on dad. Have his style coordinate but remember that we want him to be happy. And if linen shorts and boat shoes will keep him happy, have him throw on a matching belt and we’re good to go. Easy peasy!

And, finally, because this blog post wouldn’t be complete without me saying something about the amazing family featured, these photos are intended to show joy and the miraculous work that the human body is capable of. Morgan’s delivery of her first son was extremely fraught and it’s a miracle that both she and her son survived.

Now pregnant with #2, Morgan wanted to honor her body for the miracle that it is, bringing her firstborn into the world and carrying her second baby to this point. She wanted to highlight the journey that has gotten her here and show her babies that she is not ashamed of her body, rather she is proud of what it is capable of.

As you can see from the photos, this family exudes love and joy. This session was an honor for me to capture and I was happy to hear that baby #2 arrived happy and healthy some weeks later 🤍
