Book Your Baby’s Milestone Sitter Session

So your baby is turning six months old and you’re ready to book that milestone session. You did the newborn photos, you’ve got the one-year cake smash on the calendar, and six months feels like the perfect middle point. Symmetrical. Tidy. Makes total sense. But here’s the thing – I want to gently nudge you to pump the brakes just a little, because waiting a few extra weeks could be the difference between “cute photos” and GAH, look at those chunky little ankles photos. And trust me, you want the second kind.

The Six-Month Pressure Is Real (But It Doesn’t Have to Be)

I totally get it. A lot of parents come to me having already done a newborn session – sometimes even a three-month milestone too – and they want that satisfying rhythm of equal spacing throughout the first year. Newborn, six months, one year, done. Clean and simple.

And I will absolutely photograph your baby at six months on the dot if that’s what you want. No judgment here, I promise, and I will be delighted throughout (and so will you).

But what I’ve seen over and over again is that some six-month-olds just aren’t sitting up on their own yet. Their cores are still developing, and that’s completely normal. The problem is that when a baby isn’t strong enough to sit upright independently, I have to improvise. And improvising usually means tucking them into a bucket or a prop that hides most of their body so they look like they’re sitting.

The face is adorable, yes. But the toes. The fat little ankles. The chubby fingers gripping those sweet little feet. All of that gets buried in a bucket. And I don’t want that for you.

What I Actually Want to Capture at Your Baby’s Sitter Session

Here’s my honest philosophy: I don’t like one-dimensional photos. I’m not here to just capture a face. I want the whole picture – literally.

I want landscape portraits and portrait mode portraits. I want a wide shot that shows the whole scene and a close-up detail shot of those tiny fingers. I want to stand directly above your baby and shoot straight down into their face with their eyes in focus and their little body trailing off into the distance below them.

But here’s the catch with that last one – if your baby isn’t sitting with a solid, confident core, they look up to see what that weirdo with the camera is doing… and then they topple over. Now I haven’t gotten my shot, your baby has bonked their head, and the next several frames are red-eyed and sniffly. Not exactly the vibe anyone was going for. 😅

Waiting until your baby is sitting sturdy and strong means I can do all of it. Every angle, every detail, every glorious roll of baby chub on full display.

When Is the Right Time for a Sitter Session?

The sweet spot is somewhere between 6 and 8 months – but the milestone I’m actually watching for isn’t the number on the calendar. It’s whether your baby can sit upright on their own with confidence.

Here’s what makes the timing work beautifully:

  • Sitting independently, not just barely: Their core should be strong enough to hold them upright for the full 45-minute session without needing to be propped or supported.
  • Before they start crawling: This is key. A pre-crawler is a captive audience. Once they’re on the move, keeping them in frame becomes a whole different adventure. 🤪
  • Morning sessions are golden: Book for when your baby is at their happiest – right after they wake up for the day or after that first nap. A well-rested baby is a smiling, engaged baby.
  • Fed, but not mid-meal: Your baby should be satisfied and not hungry. A full, happy baby is way more cooperative than one eyeing the clock for their next bottle.
  • Clean faces before you arrive: Give their face a good wipe-down before you head to the studio. Boogies and leftover banana crust from breakfast are not the accessories we’re going for. I’ll do a quick once-over when you arrive, but starting fresh saves us both time (and means we can start with a non-irritated baby).

The Whole First Year Is Worth Celebrating

Here’s what I really want you to hold onto: the whole first year is precious, not just the six-month mark.

A 6 to 8 month old baby who has hit their sitting milestone is one of the most delightful subjects to photograph. They are smiley and curious and so engaged with everything around them. They make eye contact. They laugh. They study you with that adorably serious baby face and then break into the biggest gummy grin when you least expect it.

The photos from a well-timed sitter session are beyond sweet. They are the kind of images that make you stop mid-scroll and just feel something.

If your baby hits six months and they’re sitting like a champ, great – let’s do it. If they’re not quite there yet, waiting another few weeks is genuinely worth it. I’d rather you walk away with a full gallery of squidgy, pudgy, sitting-baby glory than a beautiful face peeking out of a basket.
